BTS

BTS or Bangtan Sonyeondan )방탄소년단; Hanja: 防彈少年團) translates to “Bulletproof boy scouts”, according to 29 year old J-Hope, the name means “to block out stereotypes, criticisms, and expectations that aim on adolescents like bullets.” The group contains 7 members (3 rappers and 4 vocalists) and their current ages range from 25-30. The band was created in 2010, but their first hit song “No More Dream” was released on June 12th, 2013. With almost 15 years together as a boy band the group has gained a following of over 89.19 million fans. These fans are known as A.R.M.Y (Adorable Representative MC for Youth). The group has also engaged in numerous philanthropic efforts, including working with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on their “Love Myself” campaign to end violence against children and young people. They were the first K-Pop band to be nominated for a Grammy Award and a Brit award. They have over 37 Billion listens on Spotify, and have broken 23 Guinness world records. Some of them being the most streamed group on Spotify, most followed music group on Instagram, most Twitter engagements (average retweets) for a music group, most viewers for the premiere of a music video on YouTube, and fastest time to reach one million followers on TikTok.

BTS Currently has 8 studio albums and 6 Ep’s such as Wings, BE, Butter, Map of the soul 7, 2 cool 4 skool, You never walk alone, face yourself, and Proof. Map of the soul 7 was their most sold album with over 1 million copies having been sold. Their most popular song ever is Dynamite with 1,950,546,946 listens on spotify. My universe, Left and Right, Fake love, and Butter being in their top 5 as well. RM has written and composed much of the band’s output since their debut in 2013, often alongside bandmates J-Hope and Suga. Each of the members are very creative and each play a part in the choreography for their music videos. Their most popular music video having 351 million views.

JungKook

Jungkook or Jeon Jung Kook (전정국) was born on September 1, 1991 in Busan, South Korea. His position on the team is Main Vocalist, Lead Dancer, and Sub Rapper. He went to Seoul School of Performing Arts; Global Cyber University and Before joining the group he was a handball player. He is ranked 1st on TC Candler “The 100 Most Handsome Faces of 2019. He made his solo debut on July 14, 2023 with the digital single “Seven“ and since then has released 2 solo albums and has over 19.6 monthly listeners

V

V or Kim Tae Hyung (김태형) was born on december 30th, 1995. He was born in Daegu, but later moved to Geochang where he spent his life until he moved to Seoul. His position on the team is Sub Vocalist and Visual. He attended Korea Art School; Global Cyber University. He acted in the Korean drama “Hwarang” (2016-2017) and ranked 1st in the “Top 100 Most Handsome Faces of 2017“. V has released a few of his own singles and has 5.5 million monthly listeners.

Jimin

Jimin or Park Ji Min (박지민) was born on October 13, 1995 in Busan, South Korea. His education is from Busan High School of Arts; Global Cyber University – Theater and film major (bachelor). He was the last member to join BTS and his position is Main Dancer and Lead Vocalist. He made his solo debut on March 24, 2023 with the mini album “Face“ and he currently has 13.1 million monthly listeners.

Suga

Suga or Min Yoon Gi (민윤기) was born on March 9,1993 in Buk-gu, Daegu, South Korea. Education from Global Cyber University – Liberal Arts Major (bachelor). Suga has co-composed/co-produced 120+ songs and his position on the team is lead rapper.  Suga uses the alias Agust D for his solo works. (“DT”, short for his birth place “Daegu Town”, and “Suga”, spelled backwards) He made his official solo debut on April 21, 2023 with the full-length album “D-Day“ and currently has 3.4 million monthly listeners.

J-hope

J-hope or Jung Ho Seok (정호석) was born on February 18, 1994 in Gwangju, South Korea. His position is Main Dancer, Sub Rapper, Sub Vocalist. He chose the name “J-Hope” as his stage name because he wants to be a source of light and hope to his fans. On March 2, 2018, J-Hope released his 1st mixtape “Hope World”, with the title track “Daydream.” He made his official solo debut on July 15, 2022 with the album Jack In The Box. And now has 3.3 million monthly listeners

Jin

Jin or Kim Seok Jin (김석진) was born on December 4, 1992 in Anyang, Gyeonggi-do. He is the oldest member and his position is sub vocalist. He has an education at Konkuk University; Hanyang Cyber University – Films major (masters/graduate).

RM

RM (Rap Monster) or Kim Nam Joon (김남준) was born on september 12, 1994 in Ilsan, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. His education is from Apgujeong High School; Global Cyber University – Electronic engineering major (bachelor). In 2006 RM studied languages in New Zealand for 4 months and he is the main speaker and translator of the group. On November 13 2017, Namjoon wrote a message on the group’s official fan cafe announcing he changed his stage name from Rap Monster to RM. Namjoon stated that “RM” stands for “Real Me.”  He made his official solo debut on December 2, 2022 with the full-length album “Indigo“. And now as over 2.9 million monthly listeners.

Where are they now?

In 2022 it was announced that each member wanted to take a break and work on themselves and each of their solo careers. Stating, “I think we should spend some time apart to learn how to be one again,” J-Hope added. “I hope you don’t see this as a negative thing, and see it as a healthy plan. I think BTS will become stronger that way.” But it is also widely known that BTS is taking a break to serve the Korean Military, as it is required male citizens between the ages of 18 and 35 to perform compulsory military service in South Korea. The hiatus began in 2022 when on December 13, 2022 Jin officially enlisted as an active-duty soldier. He got discharged on June 12, 2024. On April 18, 2023, J-Hope started his military service. He was discharged on October 17, 2024. Suga started his military service on September 22, 2023. December 11, 2023 RM and V quietly enlisted at the Korean Army Training Center in Nonsan.  Jimin and Jungkook enlisted on December 12, 2023. It is understood that the seven members will get back together and continue being a part of BTS after they’ve completed their military services.

BTS is expected to get back together in 2025.
